Port Arthur Convict Buildings
Photo Name :
Port Arthur Convict Buildings
Location :
Port Arthur, Tasmania, Australia
Photo Description :

Port Arthur was established in the 1830s as a penal convict settlement and the Hospital at the historic site was built in 1842. It is situated on top of Settlement Hill, whilst the Paupers' Mess was built in 1864 and housed the youngest convicts and street urchins. Both of these historic buildings now lie in ruins and during the late evening provide a chilling and eerie reminder of what life must have been like at the Port Arthur Penal Colony.
